ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s No. 1 Continuous Caster
ABSTRACT:To optimize productivity, steel grades of different chemistries are
often cast sequentially. This can include flying tundish changes and grade separation
plates inserted into the mold. Although these practices aim to separate the grades,
some mixing is still possible. A unique imprint of the crater shape in the as-cast slab is
ᇏݓࣁඋ࿐߶
formed as a result. Micro-x-ray fluorescence, in addition to several other innovative
tools and techniques, was used to reveal and analyze the crater shape from multiple
slabs. This paper reviews findings from the extensive investigation carried out at
ArcelorMittal Dofasco and proposes an explanation of the imprint’s formation.
